Book Review

So i been trying to get back into the swing of things. Being at school really drains me to the point that i do not really get time for myself. So this week, i decided to do something fro me, and read a book.

Ok so maybe some people dont think reading a book is necessarily something done for fun, but to me it is. I used to read atleast 2-3 books a week when i had time to spare. But at school, thats out of the question.

Anyway the book i decided to pick up in called Hiding in Hip Hop by Terrence Dean

Ok so this book is basically the author Terrence Deans life story. From growing up in a home with a drug addict prostitute mother to being molested at age 13 by a male babysitter. With all the odds stacked against him Terrence managed to become well known in the entertainment industry even becoming a producer at MTV.

So whats the big deal, some may ask. Well the book takes a turn in the beginning from not being a basic memoir but more of a tell all without telling all. Terrence, throughout the book goes on to discuss sexual encounters he has had with major players in entertainment whether actors or artist in Hip Hop. These artist (some of which who have girlfriends and even wives) are participating in same sex encounters with Terrence behind this significant others backs. The other MAJOR thing about this book is no names are revealed, so your basically playing a guessing game the whole time.

Overall i have to say that this book was an 'interesting' read when it wasnt giving me a headache trying to figure things out. It wasnt the best "Tell All" i've ever read but it wasnt the worst either.

I'd have to say it fell somewhere between Confessions of a Video Vixen by Karrine Steffans

and

Insatiable by Heather Hunter

But with all that said, I still recommend this book as an interesting read.

So because I absolutely love NY and all the free shows that happen every summer, I made it my duty to see one after work today. But before the show even started, I was entertained by this man who had not a care in the world and wanted to dance for no reason. I had to share the video I recorded of him.. absolutely hillarious.

Im back folks...finally! I know i said i'd come back on Sunday but between the celebrating and the fact that i thought I was melting (i call it my personal heat wave mentality) im back a little later then i suspected. But better late then never.

Anyway I wanted to share my wonderful birthday experience with all of you in blogger land....

I began my 20th year celebration by going to the NYC Sex Museum. Why you make ask? Well only because I thought it would be an enlightening educational experience. This picture I captured while there has to be the definition of the exhibit... entertaining::

Anyway, the next day I hit up a WONDERFUL Thai restaurant named Land... mmm thats all i can say. I had Salmon Fried Rice which was ahhh-mazing! Heres my rice:

So the next day I continued my celebration by first going to Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and it was wonderful. Heres the best shot I got

I went on to the South Ferry which was so nice even in the heat that I was persuaded to climb onto a table..

So although I am back I have to take another short break. But not because I'm uninspired. Nope! because im goin to turn 20 in three days. Yes thats right, my 20th birthday is 3 days away. So i will be spending this week celebrating, and working (cuz its also my first week back at work). Anyway, I shall be back hopefully on Sunday with great stories (hopefully).

So a couple of days ago I woke up at 5am to the sound of screeching cats. I dont know if any of you have ever heard a sound like this, but its like nails being dragged down a chalkboard, or like baby animals being slaughtered. Its just horrible. I dont know where these cats came from, but it seems as though they have established their permanent residence in my garage. I have yet to figure out how they even got in.

So anyway, today when i was leaving my house, to my surprise what do i stumble upon but four kittens (born about a two days ago) being kicked out of my garage by my dad. I guess the shrieking of the stray cat was it giving birth. Anyway, I decided to share the pics i got of them with all. We were gonna give the kittens away bcuz they are so cute, but we left for like 30 minutes and went back and all the cats were gone. (i guess the parents came and moved them to a new location)

AMY WINEHOUSE

Shes my idol! And although I know in my heart i shouldnt say that too loud or too proud, for people may think i idolize all thing negative (drugs, alcohol, making a fool of myself), but i cant help it. I absolutely LOVE Amy Winehouse. And the fact that she battles her inner demons so publicly is such a shame.

Her recent performance at the Rock in Rio Lisbon concert proves that she needs an intervention immediately.

Her obvious disregard for her career is making me extremely sad. Her music is the soundtrack to my life, and the fact that she can no longer sing those songs I love let alone create new pieces, saddens me.

This is the Amy i once adored and looked up to...

but i am now constantly having to see the 'current' Amy...withering away and slowly killing herself.

Its onlii fair that i share with you what i recently seen that made me dedicate this post to the one and only Winehouse, and that was her recent performance at Rock In Rio. Below are the videos of a once amazing rising star, on the road to failure...

Horrible. Embarrassing. Disappointing. and downright Ridiculous! I can onlii hope Amy looks in the mirror and realizes that she can get help..and its never too late for a change/intervention. As upset as it makes me, i will still always root for her.

So instead of leaving this negative imprint of my idol in all of the minds of my fellow bloggers, i will instead leave you with a lovely performance when she was still good... Enjoy!

Imagine All of Us Just The Same..

I'm back..and not by any exciting force... I know i have abandoned LoveHateSensation and all my great blogger pals, but ive been feeling 'blah' these past few months. Blah about school (which is now over thank goodness), blah about my nightlife (which has been rather non existent lately), and blah about everything else I've been around.

But i'm back..I wish with some good news, but no. Instead i'm livid. Livid and annoyed! I went shopping yesterday, one of my favorites, hoping to rekindle that old flame i once shared w/ the wonderful cultural NYC. Instead i was annoyed by everything i saw. And what I saw was modern day conformity....

SoHo, once the place for individuals is now covered with a uniform. But not those classy cute preppy catholic school uniforms (which i wore a mere 2 years ago). No! its a uniform of the Hip Hop Punkster Hipster Posers (my friend likes to call them KANYE-SWAG-DUPLICATORS) .... what is this uniform you may ask? Well it was once something i thought would be cute for the spring, a new look that not everyone could pull off, but those that could would do it with class and dignity. I thought this until i experienced it first hand and it was completely overdone.

The first part of the uniform is the colored skinny jean...

now i myself cannot say i was not once into this jean..matter of fact i bought 3 in the winter excited to let them be seen by the world in spring. But yesterday after seeing them being sold in EVERY store (even on some street corners) and counting 9 girls in Forever21 with the exact same ones on and then a boy outside the store also wearing them, I realized, its time to let the jean go. And that is exactly what I did, I let that jean go to my 9 year old cousin. Maybe she can save it for when style will be recycled by the time shes in her late teens.

Part two of the uniform...the Kanye scarf..

You know you've seen it..cuz i seen it EVERYWHERE, and im sick of it! Now I am a scarf lover myself. I love how they keep my neck warm and are a great outfit accessory, but thats when there is a swift breeze outside, not when its 74 degrees. And i never been a fan of this style scarf to begin with. Now i have a few friends who own this scarf in many colors, and love it with all their might; but for me, this needs to go. If your not a performer on the Glow In The Dark tour and your not Kanye's entourage, maybe its time you let it go!

Keeping on the topic of Kanye, something i saw wayyy too much... shutter shades..

Now i know we couldnt tell Kanye nuthin', but i can tell you something... You look stupid!! your not blocking the sun, and your not wearing a prescription...leave those shades to the pros, K. West himself.

Last part of the uniform which worked my nerves yesterday were the faux gold rope chains:

These chains once made popular by Run DMC back in the day, were all well and dandy back then, but when paired with all these other things..it just doesnt work.

Conformity, I know nothing can ever be done to change this. I mean followers will always need someone to follow. Personally, I am not once to want to look like the next guy, and i am definitely going to try my hardest this summer to avoid this uniform by all cost.

You may agree, or you may not, but I hope that coming back to my old LoveHateSensation with such a passion can onlii bring positive posts in the future...

So as usual I stumbled across something interesting. These inmates in the CPDRC detention and rehabilitation center in the Philippines dance to choreographed routines. On their main youtube page it says that dancing transforms negativity, and i think its a brilliant idea. So im back from vaca and i thought my writers block would be gone but its def. not. I think the gloominess of this weather is getting to me..WHERE IS SPRING??

So I visited my aunt this weekend and got to see my little cousin. She's 8 and out of control. Her and her friend were going on telling me all this stuff they know about sex and love and I was like where are you guys learning this from. So they told me that their school library has this book called Its So Amazing which all the kids are borrowing because its so interesting, and they showed me the book. I was truly traumatized. It was a bit too detailed and advanced for my little cousins eyes if you ask me. I'm all for sexual education but thats like in 6th grade not 3rd. And we wonder why these young kids are getting into so many situations. Here are some pics directly from the book.

Oh how I miss the serene comfort of relaxing after a long hard day and blogging, but lately I've been so caught up with school, work, interning; that I've lost sight of my first love :( my blog. But finally I'm back!! This past week has been a bit hectic for me, but I had to fill my blog family in on what i've been up to....

Recently, (Monday) i go the chance to intern at NYC Fashion Week. And I have fell in love with the Brazilian Designer Iodice. K so heres the back story, Iodice was founded by Waldemar Iódice during the 1980s as a knitwear company. It later evolved to a full fledged fashion line but still displays many knitwear throughout the collection. Waldemar's slogan is "being connected to the world and to people’s attitude, without compromising your own personal style.”

So yesterday, myself and my friend went on yet another shopping excursion. We're trying to plan a black and red party, so I went on a quest for a cute mini black dress and instead of finding the perfect dress i found the perfect shoes (yea it's kinda weird to get shoes and not a dress but hey these shoes are super cute)! So I want togive a big shout of to Forever21 in SoHo for selling these wonderful shoes for just $26.90.

Anyway, in my dorm,the RA's usually put something nice on your door when it's time to move back in. Like a poster of your name in some artistic way with a picture or a quote. So when I came back for this new semester I had a really nice quote on my door and it has inspired me.

If you cant see it, it's a quote by Louisa May Alcott (the author of Little Women). It says:

Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.

This quote is like the story of my life. I have so many aspirations and goals and sometimes it seems like my vision may get a bit cloudy, or the goals are miles away. But if I continue to believe, I can follow what I hope to accomplish and get there some day.

So I just got this really random email to check out this online exhibit. This was the description I was given:

A strange population has invaded the city. Most of them spend their day watching what's happening in the streets. Everyone seems frozen in a posture. Most often standing, sheltered behind large plate glass windows. Some lower their eyes, others seem to be watching you stubbornly. Sometimes they smile. They remain however discreet, staying behind the sidewalk. Although they were unknown, their silhouettes become familiar over the meetings. We can see a wide variety of profiles. However, they are all beautiful... Who are these thousands of people that we crossed in the street without ever truly meet them? How the appearances build our judgments? What self-image we feel in watching others? How fashion dresses our gaze? The "beautiful attitude" to fill the emptiness of our relationships? It's also an experimental work on light and color.

After reading this I came to the conclusion that they were talkin about mannequins. I dunno, I got a bit confused. Anyway I went to the site and found some really interesting pictures. Here are some of my favorites.

Project Re-decorate

I really been thinking about redecorating my room. Although I'm away at school most of the year, I'd like for my room at home to have a welcome back feeling. Currently the walls are a Hawthorne yellow. Which is a soft shade of yellow.

I read somewhere that Yellow is stimulating, sunny and cheerful. It is associated with intellect, power and creative energy. Pale yellow make small rooms seem larger. Yet with the yellow surrounding me i feel so bland. I want to put up interesting things on the walls and make it feel more like home.

So here's something interesting. With all the hoopla about "going green" the next thing to jump on the band wagon has been the Air Jordan XX3's. It is made with sustainable materials (in other words environmentally friendly materials). It can be called the first "green" shoe in the sports footwear category.

On Jan. 25th, 23 retailers will each receive 23 pairs of the Air Jordan 23s (these will sell for $230). Then a limited edition NBA all-star version will hit stores Feb. 16. Finally the national release will hit shelves Feb. 23 retailing for $185.

Personally I never been much of a Jordans fan. These aren't ugly or anything and they are trying to help the enviroment, but I know I wont be making this purchase.

I'm in love. But not any kind of love. Real love. Even more then shopping, it's like reading you favorite book for the millionth time and feeling like you just read it for the first time all over again.

My new love is:

Yes thats right. Missbehave Magazine. I heard about it a while ago and always kept my eye out for it and could never find it. So finally I decided to leave the newsstands alone and head to the bookstore (Barnes And Noble to be exact) and there it was. Exactly two copies of this beautiful pink cover. So I grabbed it and made it to checkout in 30 seconds flat.

So what do I absolutely LOVE about Missbehave? Well let me see...EVERYTHING. This has to be the realist, most down to earth, honest magazine for women out there. The articles were great, the colors were vibrant. This is definitely my dream magazine to freelance for.

Ok so since this is the 6th issue I'm definitely in the process of trying to backorder the last 5.

I suggest everyone to go out and purchase a copy of this wonderful magazine.

I just finished watching one of the best movies ever made. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and it has fully inspired me. I've seen it like 20 times, but the more I watch, the more it gets to me. Maybe it's the fact that I too once went to a Catholic H.S. that I have a little soft spot for it, but it really has an educational purpose.

There were three quotes that inspire me to reach full potential.

"Lemmie remind of something, If you wanna be somebody and you wanna go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention cause every time something scary comes up and you decide to run, y'all r gonna be running for the rest of your life."

"Now listen, I know you've got to think about your image, cause image is important to you, because of course your friends are gonna dictate your actions through the rest of your lives, and I wouldn't want you to step away from them and become an individual, that would almost be too much!"

"Don't ask me about being a writer.If when you wake up in the morning and you can think of nothing but writing...then you're a writer."

These quotes are wonderful...Don't let anything block your path to success and make you run from what you're set to do, dont follow in others footsteps--be your own person, and always follow what's in your heart.

To me:
Life is what you make it. You need to follow the path you create for yourself, not what a path that is already drawn out for you.

Its back and better then ever. The final season is here and I'm ready to cry. I just finished watching the first episode of the final season and I'm so ecstatic as to what is to come. This show is definitely the truth.

Basically the police want pay increases or are ready to walk off the job which is leading to animosity between the cops.

The kids are still on the streets doing what they know best...Hustling.

And the press is even more active this season showing the influence between politics and media.

My favorite scenes of the night had to be the ones with Tristan Wilds who plays Michael Lee. This 18 year old has potential to be a great actor in the future.

Shopping Excursion

So today I went on a quest with my wonderful friend Miss Whoever You Are ...I heard through the grapevine that my favorite store in the whole world was having an amazing sale. $1, $5, and $10 markdowns.
That's right! H&M was having a sale so I went on a quest. From Soho to Union Square to 5th ave to 34th Street. A quest for the perfect buys. I ended up going 6 H&Ms in a period of 4 hours and getting 1 sweater! I was so dissapointed. Anyway along the way I did encounter something really odd.

Now being from NYC im used to seeing people perform in the subway. That's nothing new. But in Soho (Prince Street to be exact) I saw the funniest thing.

This guy was playing his music. But it wasn't any music. It sounded like UFO's landing and brainwashing music. I wanted to record him but he gave me dirty looks.

Then on top of that he had this really creepy cat just sitting on a fluffy pillow. It was odd.

Anyway I went to all these H&M's...

After hours of searching I got one pull over sweater for $14.95. I found a beautiful black dress but they only had two sizes. One size under me and one size above, so I got pretty sad. I think I'm going to take a H&M break for a while. And check it out again for Spring.

I think i have a problem. A serious problem at that. An addiction. But not any addiction. No im not addicted to alcohol or even any other mind altering narcotic. I have the worst addiction of all. A shopping addiction!!! I cant stop and its definitely getting worst.

The easy access of being able to order whatever you want online is getting to me. The simplicity of viewing your items, putting in your credit card number, and pressing send is pulling me in. Being able to track where your package is controlling me.

Everyday, i get on the computer at least 4 times a day, not to say hi to my wonderful friends, or even listen to music, or write on this wonderful blog; but to go to a number of websites (Onatoko, Fred Flare, Go Jane, 80s Purple, and Karmaloop to name a few) to see recent arrivals and sales.

My friends and family think its ridiculous and crazy, and I'm starting to believe them. I definitely need help.

I mean yea its cute...but do i really need it??? Probably not.

With all that said, I hope i can get this problem under control soon. Being on vacation from school gives me more and more incentive to sit in front of a computer and click add to cart. Maybe I need to get a hobby or something to keep me busy...

Inspirational Icon of January

I started to think about how there aren't that many African American models in the industry. There are more now then there were at certain periods of time, but in the end they are a small percentage of the well known super models of our time. This brought me to think about my Inspiration for the month of January.

A lot of people may consider Beverly Johnson as the first African American supermodel, but this is not a fact. She was the first African American to grace the cover of American Vogue (August 1974). And she has helped set the standard for aspiring African American models. But to me the true first African American SUPER model was Peggy Anne Freeman better known as Donyale Luna.

Donyale (who graced the cover of the March 1966) cover of Vogue has a really intriguing back story.

Born 1 January 1945 in Detroit Michigan, Luna was always different. A relative has described her as "a very weird child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream." This dream seemed to take her straight into her adult life.

Luna always seemed to live in a fantasy world. Although her birth certificate named her parents as Peggy and Nathaniel Freeman, Donyale always insisted that her biological father was a man with the surname Luna and that her mother was Mexican. According to the Donyale, one of her grandmothers was reportedly an Irishwoman who married a black interior decorator.

After being discovered by photographer David McCabe, Donyale moved from Detroit to New York. In 1967 Mannequin manufacturer Adel Rootstein designed a mannequin in Luna's image as a follow up to the 1966 Twiggy mannequin. Throughout the 60s' and the early 70' Donyale was big. She starred in numerous movies produced by Andy Warhol and in 1966, Time magazine declared that it was "The Year of Luna". She even had a spread the April 1975 issue of Playboy.

The reason for the decline in her career was her odd behavior. Beverly Johnson once said :

[Donyale] doesn't wear shoes winter or summer. Ask her where she's from -- Mars? She went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn't show up for bookings. She didn't have a hard time, she made it hard for herself.

From the beginning you could tell Donyale had her inner demons. Because of her personal turmoils, Donyale never really wanted to be considered African American. She always had racial problems within herself. Journalist Judy Stone once asked her about whether her appearances in Hollywood films would benefit the cause of black actresses, Luna replied, "If it brings about more jobs for Mexicans, Chinese, Indians, Negroes, groovy. It could be good, it could be bad. I couldn't care less."

She also had a serious drug problem. In the late 60s she commented about LSD:
I think it's great. I learned that I like to live, I like to make love, I really do love somebody, I love flowers, I love the sky, I like bright colors, I like animals. [LSD] also showed me unhappy things -- that I was stubborn, selfish, unreasonable, mean, that I hurt other people."

On May 17, 1979 Donyale died in a hospital in Italy of a drug overdose.

Even with all her faults, I love Donyale. She set out to do something she always dreamed of, and achieved it even when people didn't believe in her. Which is why for the month of her birth i have to say that Donyale Luna is my Inspiration for the month of January.

I will miss both the smiles and the tears and the ups and downs that 2007 brought. But it's time for 2008.

So i have a new love. It has always been my love, but now its evolving. The thought of dressing up and going out to grab a bite to eat is captivating to me. Especially because i live in the wonderful city of New York and i can hop on a subway get to whatever borough i need to go and get some wonderful food. Lately i been trying different restaurants from different
cultures. I picked 3 of my new faves.

Faan: Asian Fusion (Brooklyn)

They have really good food for a reasonable price. They carry options from Japanese to Vietnamese to Thai. Best of all is they deliver.

Columbia Cottage: Chinese (Manhattan)

With extremely reasonable prices (about $1-$3 more then you neighborhood Chinese restaurant) and the fact that all entrees come with a free pitcher of wine...it gets no better...mmm mmm mmm lol (they also deliver)

Cabana: Caribbean and Latin American (Manhattan)

mmmm mmm Empanadas. Long wait, but great atmosphere.

Restaurants and me go hand in hand...i just love food and i really love going to classy places with wonderful friends great conversation over a nice hot plate...

I really want this new camera. I been thinking about it all day. I mean my current camera is great...at 5 mega pixels and takes amazing pics (including my main profile pic), people are usualy surprised. But the new one i want, its 12 mega pixels. Can you imagine how much better my pics will be. I think i'll have to get it before the new year comes around.

Ma Vie (My Life)

So today my dad asked me to watch an educational video about Guyana. I guess it was a kind of know your heritage thing. But either way it enlightened me to write about it. Every time I tell someone i'm 1/2 Guyanese they say one of two things...Where is that? or Wait, you don't look Indian.

There is so much about Guyana that people don't know. There are a multitude of races in Guyana. There are people of Asian-Indian decent, African decent, American Indian decent, Chinese decent, and European decent. This is why so many people can be from Guyana and still look so different. Anyway, Guyana is located in South America on the Northern coast. It is the only country in South America that calls English its official language. Guyana means land of many waters in Amerindian.

Some of the best landmarks are:

Kaieteur Falls, the largest single drop water fall in the world.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge; the fourth longest floating bridge in the world. (It used to be first)

And the Botanical Gardens which has housed
Manatees since 1895

Guyana is beautiful and amazing, and its part of my life that I embrace with open arms!!

Les Enfants Ayant Des Enfants (Children Having Children)

Today i got to spend some time with my little cousin who i hardly get to see. She's 8 years old and crazy entertaining. Anyway, she was watching Nickelodeon and telling me how much she enjoys this show called Zoey 101. Then it occured to me the main character 16 year old Jamie Lynn Spears (younger sister to Britney) announced no more then a week ago that she was 12 weeks pregnant.

Now i'm not one to say who can or cannot have babies because these celebrities are humans too and its their bodies and their lives, but i do find certain things in this situation quite disturbing.

Number 1 Jamie Lynn is a child. A child carrying a child. Number 2 is the fact that with all this scrutiny around her family already how can she raise a child in a healthy environment? Number 3 why is the father of the child 19 years old and how convenient is it that they met at church?? And Number 4 what is the world coming to? Is this what my little cousins have to look up to?

Is it me, or are the morals of society all screwed up...

So today i was minding my own business doing my everyday reading and i stumbled across something realli odd. Last week I finished this book called The Vixen Diaries by Karrine Steffans (also known as SuperHead by the hip hop community). Her first book (Confessions of a Video Vixen) actually broke the top ten NY Times Best Seller List (shocking for a memoir about sleeping with the top heads in entertainment huh?)

Anyway i came across something very strange. On Karrine's website she has actually stumped down to selling her pre-worn clothes. Now I'm def. not one to knock pre-worn clothes (i mean thrift shop shoppin is still in), but why oh why would anyone choose to purchase clothing worn by a well known harlot (thats a nice word for hoe guys). Mode D'hiver (Winter Fashion)

So some may think, on a nice snowy day stuck inside you should be studying. Especially when its finals week. But not me, all i can think about is WINTER WONDERLAND:

I dont know why, because i definately hate winter... the heavy jackets (even if they are stylish)

En Hiver ou Au Printemps (Winter or Spring)

So i was sitting in my room..trying to think of a profound discussion for my first blog entry...and all that kept coming to me was flip flops, shorts, and hoodies. Now i know most would wonder why are spring/summer items coming to mind in mid-winter. I too asked myself this. Then it came to me. Tonight, walking into my on campus dorm, I saw a girl in a hoodie. She shrieked outside "ahhhh its so cold!!" This made me question, where was her jacket?? The temperature at the time was high 30's, and the fact that i go to school outside of NYC doesnt help (on a good day, our temp is a 5 degree difference from the city). Now maybe it wouldnt be so bad if she was wearing a nicely insulated hoodie, but instead she was wearing the typical Iona ($39.98) apparel [as pictured below] So some may asks, what does a hooded sweater, shorts and flip flops have to do with each other. Well its sooo common to see on any given day (especially on days below 40 degrees), kids wearing these ridiculous items. I dont get it....
